Splints

A dental splint or occlusal splint is used to protect your teeth and jaws from grinding or clenching (bruxism). It is a removable appliance that is worn at night time and usually used to treat TMD (temporomandibular disorder).

Our dentist’s check for signs of wear in your mouth each time you attend your check up, however, some patients may be aware of the signs from headaches, sore teeth or jaws and sensitivity.

Tooth grinding can cause long term jaw degeneration, cracks or broken teeth and sensitivity. If you require a splint, the dentist will determine which type of splint is best for you and take some impressions of your teeth to send to a laboratory in Canberra for the splint to be made. You will then be fitted with your splint and given instructions on its use and cleaning.
